A Presentation to the Suburban Maryland Chapter of CREW

Garnering market opinions from the women in commercial real estate.

Last week, I had the honor to present an update on the current state of the Frederick County Commercial Real Estate Market to CREW Suburban Maryland. CREW is a national non-profit organization focused on supporting professional women in the Commercial Real Estate industry. The event was held at Miles & Stockbridge in downtown Frederick. When I was first asked to speak, I was surprised and excited.

When one looks at the Frederick County real estate brokerage industry, there is only a very small percentage women commercial agents compared to what appears to be a majority of women who broker residential real estate. In fact, a few days prior to this event I attended another event for the regional chapter of NAIOP (a North American network in the commercial real estate development and investment industry) hosted at Rockwell Brewery in Frederick. Looking around the room of 60 or so people, there were only a handful of females.

Having the opportunity to network through CREW has been professionally and personally beneficial.

Now getting back to real estate. In doing the search of information for the presentation, I found there was a lot of positive news and … news about the current Frederick commercial market. I say “… news” because I am not of fan of the phrase “bad news.” For those of us in the world of commercial real estate, when the “bad news” is something like high vacancy rates, we see “opportunity.”

Overall, the Frederick market is continuing to strengthen. The development of new Mixed Development communities (commercial, retail, and residential) such as Matan’s Renn Quarter and Jefferson Tech Park, Frederick continues to grow.
