As the 2018 Frederick County Election season closes, we poke one last bit of fun at the winners and losers in the race for the At-Large seat on the County Council.
The MacRo Report Blog, through its connection with a network of anonymous internet sources, has intercepted a secret message from one County Council At-Large candidate to another. For all we know, the source of this discovery could have been Vladimir Putin himself!
We share the content of this message exclusively with our readers:
Dear Bud,
I want to express my sincere appreciation for the effort you put into your bid as a candidate for an At-Large seat on the County Council of Frederick County, Maryland.
You did a wonderful job to get elected as a Republican four years ago by preaching your belief in the policies of former Board County Commissioners led by Blaine Young.
It wasn’t long after your victory and election as President of the newly formed County Council that you chose to switch your loyalty to County Executive Jan Gardner in her efforts to undo many of those same policies. This left many of your loyal supporters in a state of confusion, especially once you decided to leave the Republican Party and declare your status as an independent.
I praise your very naïve belief that you could win over bipartisan support from a new constituency of voters within Frederick County. Your Democratic colleagues on the Council were thrilled to play along and support your fantasy of winning new friends, as long as you voted their way.
After 3 years of frustrating your unruly Republican colleagues on the Council, you began to realize that you had no clear base of voter support to regain reelection to the Council.
Not having a party to align with, you returned to your 2014 base of voters, telling them that you had seen the light and could no longer support the Gardner agenda. You craftily pandered many of these confused souls and gathered enough signatures to allow you an unaffiliated bid for a second term for your At-Large seat.
I am so overwhelmed with gratitude, Bud, that you received and carried out my telepathic commands from the Emerald City to split the Republican vote in the At-Large race on November 6th! Your entry opened the door of opportunity for me to have a chance to fulfill my burning desire to win the seat of my dreams – the top vote-getter among all council victors, which hopefully will contribute to me becoming the inevitable President of the next County Council!
Let me help you understand the mathematics of your selfless adventure.
As early yesterday morning and with 96.5% of the votes counted, there were 181,309 votes that were cast for the 5 who were seeking the Council’s 2 At-Large seats: Republicans Phil Dacey with 42,781 and Danny Farrar with 42,531, Democrats Kai Hagen (that’s me) with 43,002 and Susan Reeder Jessee with 40,545, and Bud Otis (that’s you) as the unaffiliated candidate with 12,450.
As you can see from the results, I won the day by a mere 221 votes over Phil Dacey and just 471 votes over Danny Farrar. I mean, I was sweating bullets until about midnight when the last report was published, as I was running behind both Phil and Danny.
It was your campaign that allowed me to prevail! Just imagine what would have happened, if you had not devoted the last several months to a reelection bid.
There is no question in my mind that only a handful of Democratic voters would have been gullible enough to fall for your (our) ruse. If you were not in the race, I am sure that at least two-thirds of those uneducated deplorable morons who voted for you would have otherwise cast their ballots for Phil and Danny.
So, my friend, I am sure no more than 25% to 30% of the votes you received would have gone to Susan and me, and the other two thirds to Phil and Danny. The results of such a scenario would have set back my plans for years! Those GOP boys would have ended up with over 46,000 votes each, leaving me with barely 45,000 votes and in the loser’s column with Susan!
Bud, you truly are one of the best. You sacrificed your time and energy to the benefit of my campaign, and I just can’t thank you enough. As a token of my appreciation, I hereby anoint you the new ruler of my Emerald City, and I gladly relinquish my title as the great Wizard of KaHz to you!
Have a Bud on me, Bud!
Dilly Dilly, my friend!
Kai Hagen
