Frederick County’s Deal of the Year winner, and Rocky Mackintosh honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award

TheFRED Award Lifetime copy.jpg team at MacRo, Ltd. was honored on Thursday evening, March 30, 2017, by the Frederick County Office of Economic Development (OED) during its inaugural banquet of the Frederick Real Estate Dealmakers (FRED) Awards.  The planned annual event has been established to recognize the most successful commercial real estate transactions, projects and members of the Frederick County CRE community of the previous year.

The seven categories established by OED for the 2017 awards were the Deal of the Year, Broker of the Year, Office Brokerage Firm of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Most Creative Deal, Modern Masterpiece Award and the Perseverance Award.

MacRo, Ltd. was fortunate to be named as the winning finalist in two of the categories:

Deal of the Year:

Flying Dog Brewery Project – MacRo Ltd., Steve Chafitz Realty, The City of Frederick

Frederick County’s Director of Economic Development Helen Propheter, who presented the award stated, “This award is bigger than just a transaction. It’s more than the dollars involved, or the size of the property sold or leased. This is the deal that has far reaching impacts on the community and Frederick’s economy long after the ink has dried.”

In December of 2016, Flying Dog Brewery closed on a 31.69-acre tract of land in the Frederick Airport Park located immediately east of the Frederick Municipal Airport. The parcel is what remains from an acquisition made by the City of Frederick in 2008 for the purpose of constructing a new air traffic control tower. Flying Dog purchased the land as part of a major expansion of their operations with plans to build a 150,000-square-foot state-of-the-art brewery and a farm brewery.

The new plant would effectively triple the size of the company’s current 46,000 square foot building located on Wedgewood Blvd in the county, which will increase the number of jobs, generate additional property tax revenue and bring in entertainment and tourism dollars though its proposed outdoor concert and event venue.

MacRo’s Rocky Mackintosh and Steve Cranford represented the City of Frederick in the transaction, and Steve Chafitz Realty procured the purchaser.

Lifetime Achievement Award:

Rocky Mackintosh, MacRo, Ltd.

In what Mackintosh said was a “total surprise” not only that he received the award, but even more so was the fact that he had no idea that such an award had been established. “I am greatly honored to be recognized by the Office of Economic Development and Frederick County Government for this award,” said the nearly speechless Mackintosh.

In announcing the award Propheter said, “A long career in commercial real estate is not an easy one. The Lifetime Achievement Award winner has an incredible amount of industry knowledge, experience and passion for Frederick County.”

He has been an active participant in Frederick County’s commercial real estate industry since 1972. Eight years later Rocky founded Mackintosh, Inc., Realtors, a Frederick County general real estate brokerage firm, that is now owned and operated by his brothers.

In 1990 Rocky established MacRo, Ltd., which provides land, commercial and industrial real estate sales, leasing and consulting services to property owners in Frederick County and the surrounding Maryland region. Over his four and one half decades, Rocky and the members of his firm have brokered multiple millions of dollars of transactions within the county and has established a loyal following of repeat customers and clients.

Mackintosh has been very active in volunteering his time and talent to a number of local nonprofit organizations and served on a multitude of government committees and councils.

Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner, who presented the award later, told Mackintosh: “It was a wonderful first time ever event and I am pleased that you were so pleasantly surprised by the recognition. It is well deserved.”

The other award winners at the inaugural event were as follows:

  • Broker of the Year: Brad Benna, Matan Companies
  • Office Brokerage Firm of the Year: Avison Young for The Offices at Westview
  • Most Creative Deal: Float Frederick Project – St. John Properties · Claggett Enterprises · Proffitt & Associates Architects
  • Modern Masterpiece Award: Monocacy Trading Center – Ruppert Properties · Fitzgerald Realty · Archive Design
  • Perseverance Award: BioFactura Project – Tyler-Donegan-Duncan Real Estate · St. John Properties · Proffitt & Associates Architects

The OED website states the following regarding the qualifications for the award winners:

Any lease, sale or financing deal signed during 2016 or any new construction or renovation delivered in 2016 was eligible for an award. The nominations crossed all commercial real estate disciplines from retail and industrial to office. The impacts on Frederick County’s economy were considered as well as complexity, perseverance and creativity of the projects. In addition, special recognition was given to those commercial real estate professionals who stood out in 2016 with their achievements as Broker of the Year and for their overall contributions in a Lifetime Achievement Award.
